Access to Treatment Programs by Injecting Drug Users in Thailand

By Niphattra Haritavorn

It is estimated there are roughly 100,000 injecting drug users (IDUs) in Thailand. Studies show that between 30-50% of these are HIV infected, part of an estimated 572,500 people living with HIV in Thailand. Since 2003, the Thai government has initiated an antiretroviral program to provide medical treatment to all those with AIDS. However there remain many problems for IDU to access this treatment such as stigma and discrimination. This research will investigate social, medical and political obstacles that prevent injecting drug users gaining access to these lifesaving drugs. It will also provide insight into injecting drug users' behaviour and explore social factors behind ongoing substance abuse.
